Masterpiece International Ballet Dance Competition 2018 Coach Rosa Park

Rosa Park started her rigorous 6-year dance training at Sunwha Arts School in 1993. Her first professional experience came in 1993, when she danced Clara in The Nutcracker with Universal Ballet Company. She went on to Ewha Womans University in Korea for her B.A. degree in Dance and in her senior year, she was offered to dance for the Korea National Ballet Company (KNBC) and made her debut as a professional dancer as Marie in Yuri Grigrovich’s The Nutcracker in 2002. During her stint with KNBC, Rosa danced numerous principal and soloist roles such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Rudolf Nureyev’s Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Romeo & Juliet, Paquita, Le Cosaire, Don Quixote, La Fille Mal Gardee, Coppélia, Raymonda, Jean-Christophe Malliot’s Dove La Luna, The Flame of Paris and George Balanchine’s Symphony in C. She also collaborated with other companies such as Royal Swedish Ballet (guest soloist in Swan Lake) and Korean Ballet Theater (Raymonda and Mongyudowondo). She joined Singapore Dance Theatre (SDT) in 2009 and danced principal roles in classical ballets including Odette/Odile in Swan Lake (2009, 2012,2015), Giselle (2010, 2013), Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty (2010, 2012,2015), Juliet in Romeo & Juliet (2011, 2014), Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker (2011, 2013,2016), Paquita in Paquita (2012), Swanilda in Coppélia (2013), and Kitri in Don Quixote (2014,2016). In particular, Rosa was featured on the front cover and centre page of Dance Europe in January 2015 and received plaudits for her “formidable technique and charismatic warmth” as Kitri in Don Quixote by Deborah Weiss. Furthermore, her artistic brilliance led her to major roles in contemporaries such as Edwaard Liang’s As Above, So Below, The Winds of Zephyrus, Age of Innocence and Opus 25, George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, Serenade, Allegro Brillante, Divertimento No. 15 and Theme and Variations; Goh Choo San’s Unknown Territory, Double Contrasts and Fives; Kinsun Chan’s Slide; Ma Cong’s Shadow’s Edge; Molly Lynch’s Evening at the Ritz; Natalie Weir’s Bittersweet; Nil’s Christe’s Fearful Symmetries and Organ Concerto; Stanton Welch’s Maninyas; Val Caniparoli’s Chant. In December 2016, she made her final bow as Sugar Plum Fairy in Nutcracker as the Principal of SDT.

Rosa began teaching young dancers for auditions for ballet schools or universities and competitions, while she was a university student with her extensive experience in dance competitions. She has several awards in dance competitions including First Prize in Korea Dance Association Competition, Second Prize in the Korea Dongah Dance Competition, Silver in Kirov & Universal Ballet Competition and was a Finalist in the Prague International Competition. She has been also teaching SDT’s scholars programme since 2012 and is now a part-time instructor at NAFA and SDT.

She holds a B.A. Degree in Dance from Ewha Womans University and a Master’s Degree in Dance from Sejong University in Korea.

Media Reviews

“It is a real test of stamina as she leaps her way through solo after solo. Park has a formidable technique and warmth to match it. Her footwork is immaculate and her portrayal of a feisty yet soft-hearted young woman is delightful.” – Deborah Weiss from Dance Europe on Don Quixote (2014)

“Rosa Park has the exquisite mix of lustrous serenity and music-box precision, and delights in the iconic tinkling solo.” – Germaine Cheng from Straits Times Life on The Nutcracker (2013)

“Rosa Park endowed the White Swan with as much grace and gentility, as she gave its evil doppelganger, the Black Swan, confidence and ardour. When Odette entered, I was instantly mesmerised by Park’s evocative performance. She has complete control over her body, as she demonstrates every attitude en pointe and back port de bras, where she holds the position so perfectly.” – Flying Inkpot on Swan Lake (2012)
